Inked Trees Project My first ink drawing of a bonsai tree took me on quite the adventure – and I loved every moment of it. As a fairly new user to the medium, I eagerly observed the nature of the water and ink interacting as they swirled together or passed through my brush pens. I experimented further with my newfound technique to satiate my craving for unique, crisp textures. The process left me astonished by the possibilities I discovered; I certainly wanted more.
Bonsai trees as my repeated subject matter seemed obvious to me. I adore the presence of the trees in physical space and aimed to recreate their visual balance in my compositions. Using the small scraps of Bristol board remaining from larger projects, I created tiny frames. The first drawing was the largest at 4x8” and the smallest planned piece will fill a 2x2” square. I made my rectangles before my compositions to restrict my subject matter and challenge myself to use what I already had. The result will be illustrated in my ongoing project, “Inked Trees.” |
